Legal is the most expensive niche in search. Personal injury keywords routinely cost $100 to $300 per click in Google Ads. Some markets push past $500. A single signed case can be worth six figures, and every firm in your city knows it.
That math is exactly why law firm SEO works. The firms paying $300 per click are renting visibility. The firms ranking organically own it. Every month your site holds a page one position, you collect the clicks your competitors are paying for.
This guide covers the full strategy: how to structure your site, which pages actually rank, how to win the map pack, and how AI search is changing the way clients find attorneys. It is the same framework we use to build law firm SEO campaigns for criminal defense, personal injury, family law, and estate planning practices.

Three things make law firms different.
The competition has money. Plumbers compete against other plumbers. Law firms compete against firms with seven-figure marketing budgets, national lead generation sites like Avvo and FindLaw, and legal directories that have spent twenty years building authority. Page one is crowded with sites that take real work to displace.
Google holds legal content to a higher standard. Legal advice falls under Google’s “Your Money or Your Life” classification. Content that affects someone’s legal standing gets evaluated for expertise, authoritativeness, and trust more strictly than a blog about kitchen remodels. Thin content that might rank in other niches goes nowhere in legal.
The searcher is in crisis. Someone searching “DUI lawyer near me” at 2 a.m. is having one of the worst nights of their life. They click fast, judge faster, and call the first firm that looks credible. Rankings matter, and so does what they find when they land.
None of this means small firms cannot win. It means strategy beats spending. A five-attorney firm with the right architecture outranks a fifty-attorney firm with a lazy website. We see it constantly.
Here is the single most common mistake on law firm websites: one page titled “Practice Areas” that lists everything the firm does in a few paragraphs each.
That page ranks for nothing. Google matches pages to queries, and a page that covers DUI, divorce, wills, and car accidents in 800 total words cannot compete against a competitor’s 2,500-word page dedicated entirely to DUI defense.
The fix is one deep page per practice area, each built to stand alone:
Each page targets its own keyword set, answers the questions clients actually ask, and demonstrates the firm’s depth in that specific area. A page about truck accident claims that explains federal trucking regulations, evidence preservation letters, and how insurance companies value commercial policies will outrank a generic injury page every time.
Depth wins in legal because the searcher can tell the difference. So can Google.
For most consumer legal queries, the map pack sits above the organic results. Three firms appear. Everyone else is invisible on the first screen.
Map pack rankings run on a different system than organic rankings, and three signals dominate.
Google Business Profile. Your GBP listing needs the correct primary category (Personal Injury Attorney, Criminal Justice Attorney, and so on), complete service listings, real photos of your office and team, and consistent posting. Most firms set it up once and never touch it again. The firms that treat GBP as a living asset pull ahead.
Reviews. Volume, velocity, and content all matter. A firm with 200 reviews mentioning “car accident” and “settlement” sends Google stronger relevance signals than a firm with 40 generic five-star reviews. Build a review request into your case-closing process. Every signed client who got a good outcome should be asked, every time.
Proximity and NAP consistency. Your name, address, and phone number must match exactly across your website, GBP, state bar listing, and every directory. Mismatched NAP data quietly erodes map rankings, and law firms accumulate directory listings for years without auditing them.
If your firm serves multiple cities, each office location needs its own GBP listing and its own location page on the site. One office cannot rank in a city thirty miles away, no matter how good the SEO is. This is why we build dedicated city pages for firms expanding into markets like Charleston. Our local SEO services cover the full map pack system, from GBP and citations to location pages.

Rankings follow structure. The strongest law firm sites are built as hubs and spokes: a central pillar page covering the broad topic, with deep spoke pages covering each subtopic, all linked together deliberately.
For a criminal defense firm, it looks like this:
This does two things. It concentrates authority, because every internal link tells Google which pages matter most. And it matches how people actually search, from broad queries early in their research to specific ones right before they call.
Internal linking is the most undervalued part of this. Use descriptive anchor text that names the destination page. A link that says “DUI defense in South Carolina” passes more relevance than a link that says “learn more.” Audit your site for generic anchors and replace them. We did this across our own site and the pattern holds: descriptive anchors, every link pointing at a page that exists, no orphaned pages.
Technical health supports all of it. Fast load times, clean mobile rendering, valid schema markup for Attorney and LegalService types, and crawlable HTML. Our technical SEO and on-page SEO services exist because architecture without execution is just a diagram.
Clients have started asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Mode questions like “who is the best personal injury lawyer in Myrtle Beach” and getting direct answers with specific firm names.
This is already reshaping legal marketing, and the firms getting cited share traits you can build toward:
Their content renders as clean HTML. AI crawlers are worse at JavaScript than Googlebot. Sites that load content through heavy scripts often look empty to the systems deciding which firms to cite. Server-rendered, readable HTML wins.
They answer questions directly. AI engines lift answers from pages that state things plainly. A page that opens with “In South Carolina, you have three years from the date of a car accident to file a personal injury claim” is citation material. A page that buries that answer under 600 words of throat-clearing is skipped.
Their entity data is consistent. Firm name, attorneys, locations, practice areas, and credentials should match across the website, schema markup, GBP, state bar records, and legal directories. AI systems cross-reference sources before naming a business. Inconsistency reads as uncertainty.
They have real authority signals. Reviews, case results, attorney bios with bar admissions, media mentions. AI engines weight trust heavily for legal queries because the cost of a bad recommendation is high.
The encouraging part: everything that earns AI citations also strengthens traditional rankings. This is one strategy, executed once. Our AI Search & GEO work builds it into every law firm campaign rather than treating it as an add-on.
Honest numbers, because most agencies dodge this.
Timeline. A firm in a mid-size market with a sound website typically sees meaningful movement in four to six months and strong positioning in nine to twelve. Hyper-competitive verticals like personal injury in major metros take longer. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is selling something other than SEO.
Cost. Serious law firm SEO runs $1,500 to $10,000+ per month depending on market and competition. Project-based builds, where the architecture and pages are constructed up front, typically start around $7,500. See our full SEO pricing for the complete breakdown.
The comparison that matters. A personal injury firm paying $250 per click needs only a handful of organic clicks per month for SEO to beat the ad spend. Within a year, a well-executed campaign typically delivers traffic that would cost five to ten times as much through Google Ads. And the asset compounds. Ads stop the day you stop paying. Rankings keep working.
